Itinerary
- Beginning with a classroom based presentation on coastal features and the impacts of climate change on the local coastline. Using compasses, grid references and map keys.
- This is followed by a visit to the North Gare beach to identify coastal features, practical use of compasses in the field, habitat exploration and building sea defences on the beach.
- After lunch, a brief introduction to types of sea defences. Practical mapping skills using Ordnance Survey maps. This is followed by a visit to Seaton Carew to assess the current sea defences and see how they could be improved.
Learning Objectives
Geography National Curriculum
- Identify coastal features local to the area. Eg headlands, bays, breakwaters, sand dunes and beach.
- Identify the three coastal habitats of sand dunes, beach and rocks found at Teesmouth. To learn about the different plants and animals who live there.
- Learn about human impacts on the coast including erosion due to climate change, fires in the sand dunes and litter on the beach.
- Use OS maps of the area to identify coastal features, compass directions and grid references.
Booking Information:
- Cost of visit - £3 per child (minimum charge £80) per day, accompanying adults free.
- Visits begin at 9:30 am and groups usually leave around 2:30pm, depending on return to school journey time.
- Please be aware that when booking a coach, it needs to stay with the group for the whole day.
- Lunch can be taken in the Field Centre classroom or on picnic benches outside, weather permitting. Groups will need to take any rubbish from lunch back to school with them.
- Toilets, hand washing basins and a fully accessible toilet are available within the Field Centre building.
- The visit will be led by Field Centre Staff, who all have enhanced DBS checks.
- Risk assessments will be sent out with booking information.
- Cancellation fee of £50 for cancellations within 4 weeks of a confirmed booking.
