Itinerary
  • Beginning with a classroom based presentation on different types of rocks and their uses. Learn about how rocks and fossils are formed.
  • This is followed by a visit to the beach, to find and identify different local rocks. The children make a piece of rock art and build sand volcanoes to learn about igneous rock formation.
  • After lunch, try your hand at the Rock Challenge Experiments. Learn about the properties of rocks - permeability, hardness, magnetism and how sand is made.

  • Recognise that sand and soils are made from rocks.
  • Working scientifically using fair testing to conduct rock experiments.

Booking Information:


  • Cost of visit - £3 per child (minimum charge £80) per day, accompanying adults free.
  • Visits begin at 9:30 am and groups usually leave around 2:30pm, depending on return to school journey time.
  • Please be aware that when booking a coach, it needs to stay with the group for the whole day.
  • Lunch can be taken in the Field Centre classroom or on picnic benches outside, weather permitting. Groups will need to take any rubbish from lunch back to school with them.
  • Toilets, hand washing basins and a fully accessible toilet are available within the Field Centre building.
  • The visit will be led by Field Centre Staff, who all have enhanced DBS checks.
  • Risk assessments will be sent out with booking information.
  • Cancellation charge of £50 for cancellations within 4 weeks of a confirmed booking.
